This week saw the official public launch via social media of a new women’s community football team that hopes to join the women’s Futsal league this season.
Gibraltar Wave FC was launched via social media calling on female players wishing to join a new team to contact them.
The team, which describes itself as a “community club wanting to help develop women’s love of football and get them interested in this great sport” is hoping to join the women’s Futsal league in April.
“We want every woman to be able to enjoy the sport no matter their level of ability, we aim to help them achieve their highest potential and empower them while having fun surrounded by a supportive group of individuals,” commented Lauren after being contacted by this newspaper.
“The GFA are also very keen to have new womens’ teams to be able to expand the current league. We are kicking things off with the new futsal league which will be starting mid/end April as preparation for the 11 a side 2021/22 which is due to start in October – safe to say the current members are extremely excited for this new chapter to commence.”
The arrival of a new team into the women’s division has been welcomed by many local female footballers after seeing the demise of Lincoln Red Imps. The current women’s league this season saw Lynx FC taking over the spot held by Lincoln Red Imps attracting most of the latter’s players as Lynx launched their own team. The possibility of having a fourth team in next season’s senior women’s league would come as an added boost as more clubs continue to look at ways of attracting female players in the hope of entering the women’s division in the future. Already clubs such as Mons Calpe, Europa Point and Manchester 62 have indicated their interest in launching their own women’s team. Manchester 62 paused on the idea of entering the women’s senior league this season at the last moment even though they have been working to build a team from grassroots level during the past seasons. The club has numerous players within the youth categories including having played a full girls team in the juniors league during the past few seasons.
